They stick their arm out the window and Indicate lane changes and turns as well. Have I seen a driver in a car use them before - yes. It really depends how professional they are as a cyclist. I have seen them used properly and not properly as well. So without hand signals you would never know which way the cyclist is going. Have I seen them - yes everyday living in the city.Ĭyclists use them to drive their bikes on main roads without bike lanes. But any level of license - and cyclists - all learn the same hand signals for turning and stopping. People just choose to put their arm out in the direction their going because people (no offence) don’t know the proper signals and it would be more confusing. Yes -it’s true you probably haven’t seen people use them- but the signals for on a bike are the exact same. But if they’re on the road with the public they have to have functioning signal indicators along with brake lights. Only exception would be for parades and car shows. (Usually placed in back windows and hot wired in for commute) 100 years old or not they have to add them on to drive on our roads with public. (For here anyways but most likely most places)Ĭars are not legally allowed on the road here without indicators. Just out of curiosity, how often do you need to use hand signals?Īs a federal driving instructor and driver safety specialist in Canada I can assure you those assumptions are not correct. Maybe MA is different, and people do drive around in hundred year old cars, but for some reason I doubt it. But never in my entire life have I come across a situation where this would be useful to me. I think I saw a yourube clip of it at one point. I do think I know the hand signals you are meant to use if you happen to drive a 1920's car that was grandfathered in and doesn't require indicators. If you don't have functioning indicators, your car is not deemed road worthy in any place that I know of, meaning that they don't have functioning indicators, you can't drive them anyway. I have also never ever seen anyone use hand signals while driving a car. Not that I ever actually see cyclists indicating their turns, but if they did, that would be dyne by just pointing their arm in the right direction. The signals cyclists use are (at least here) different from the signals that you use in a car.
